There are some nude and clothing optional resorts, or if you prefer, you can find remote and secluded spots where you can sunbathe and swim in the nude with no one else the wiser.

Topless sunbathing along the beaches of the Mayan Riviera is not uncommon. There are a few resorts where topless sunbathing is accepted.

The Bare Truth About Florida's Beaches and Resorts

E-mail Print

Florida can no longer cover up the naked truth. Nude and clothing-optional resorts are taking off.  From Key West and the Florida Keys north to the Florida Panhandle, Florida Tourism is gettting a boost from those who want to really enjoy the Florida sun.
Alright, so I'm having a little fun with puns, but the truth of the matter is, that according to James Thorner of the St. Petersburg Times, one Florida county is gaining "status as the North American Capital of Nudism." That county – Pasco – just north of Tampa does have more than its share of residents and visitors willing expose themselves.

Going au' naturel is nothing new... it was a common practice back in the time of the early Olympic games in Greece. Gymnos – Greek for naked – was how these athletes trained and competed. But, with the demise of the ancient civilizations and the beginning of a religion that stressed the sinfulness of sensuality, nudism was on the decline and body shame began its rise.

Organized nudity became the fashion in the early Twentieth Century in Germany as a way of shedding the too-tight collars for less restrictive clothing. After World War II, the idea caught on as international tourism took hold. Today it is a world-wide practice, although not always widely accepted.

Certainly Florida's mild temperatures creates the perfect climate for optional clothing opportunities, even if Florida Law casts an uneven shadow on the conduct.

According to FloridaNaturist.org, "inappropriate" dress is a crime in Brevard County due to a swimwear ordinance. As a matter of fact, at the out-of-the-way, but traditionally nude Federal Beach, a Brazilian tourist was arrested for wearing a French-cut bikini. Yet, along the same coastline two hundred miles to the south, Miami-Dade County operates a legal clothing-optional beach, where any given weekend, a thousand or more totally nude men, women and children frolic in the surf and sun.

Perhaps it is the irregular distribution and enforcement of nudity laws in Florida that is driving naturists to private nude and clothing-optional resorts and clubs creating a surge in their popularity. It is becoming more popular in Florida for Resorts and clubs on private property which usually obtain land-use permits allowing the lifestyle.

Even so, The Naturist Journal reports that even private property owners in florida are at risk. Last spring, Eddie and Suzy Colosimo opened their six-acre property to visiting bikers during Daytona Beach's annual Bike Week. The Colosimo's allowed their guests to roam nude on the property. That created a stir within the county, who slapped them with a cease-and-desist order. It's a land-use issue that may play out in court.

Like other controversial issues, this one may never go away. Nude and clothing-optional proponents in florida may forever be locked into a battle with those that make and enforce the laws that govern the use of public facilities and seek to limit freedom of private land use.

So, bare if you dare while you're in Florida, but be sure to check local laws wherever you go.

Caribbean Nudist and Clothing Optional Resorts

E-mail Print

For some travelers, taking off for the Caribbean means an opportunity to "take it all off." There's just something about the infectious warmth of the Caribbean -- not to mention the hot sun -- that lends itself to "au naturel" sunbathing. For many, that's as far as it goes, but the Caribbean also has a number of resorts that allow guests to go in the buff all day long, from the breakfast buffet to afternoon pool volleyball to evening encounters in the hot tub.

Hedonism, Jamaica

The Hedonism II and Hedonism III resorts in Jamaica are the most famous clothing-optional resorts in the Caribbean. The resorts are part of the SuperClubs chain and, unlike many other nudist resorts, once cultivated an "anything goes" image. That has been toned down somewhat, but as the name indicates this is still a place where guests are encouraged to get wet, naked and wild. Toga parties, nude weddings, and hanging out at the swim-up nude bar are part of the scene here. The Hedonism resorts also sell day and night passes to non-guests.

Club Orient, St Martin

This 137-room Club Orient hotel sits on the most famous nude beach in the Caribbean and is clothing-optional throughout the property, which includes a pair of restaurants, fitness and water-sports center, boutique, and a variety of rooms, suites and villas. Fully nude sunbathing is not strictly de rigeur on Orient Beach, but it's certainly common to see entire families in the buff on this popular strand, sometimes to the obvious amazement of visiting cruise-ship passengers.

Couples Tower Isle, Jamaica

Formerly Couples San Souci, this all-inclusive resort was recently renamed for the private island that made it famous. A private ferry takes Couples guests out to Tower Island, which is a fully au naturel hideaway that provides some welcome space between nudists and the tourist who otherwise might come to gawk. Note that Tower Island is not "clothing-optional" -- if you come out here, you must have all clothing off! Couples Tower Isle is currently undergoing a major renovation and is slated to reopen in March 2009.

Desire Resort and Spa, Cancun, Mexico

Many nude resorts in the Caribbean stress that they are family friendly or cater to the mainstream nudist community and not swingers. That's not the case with Cancun's Desire Resort, which bills itself as an "erotic" adult destination where couples interested in exploring "alternative lifestyles" can frolic in a 30-person jacuzzi or a Play Room located just behind the resort's nightclub bar. The 11-room beachfront resort is all-inclusive and "appeals to liberated upscale vacationers with a wild side and couples looking to explore their sexuality." Adults (21 and older) only.

Caliente Caribe Resort and Spa, Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

This all-inclusive, clothing-optional resort is located near the Dominican Republic resort area of Puerto Plata. Amenities include al-fresco dining at the clifftop resort restaurant, premium drinks, and activities ranging from Spanish lessons to nude water volleyball. Nightlife centers on the Club Caribe, which opens nightly at 10 p.m.

Sorobon Beach Resort, Bonaire

This naturist resort has the only nude beach on Bonaire, although topless sunbathing is acceptable on other beaches on this Dutch Caribbean island. The resort has 30 chalets on a very private beach and caters to naturists from around the world. Nude cruises, massage, yoga and snorkeling are among the activities offered.

Grand Lido Braco, Jamaica

ResortsTravelers interested in going nude and choosing among the Grand Lido resorts in Jamaica seem to prefer the Grand Lido Braco, judged superior to its cousins on account of the large nude beach, pool and hot-tub area on the resort's "au naturel" side. Located near Trelawny, this upscale all-inclusive resort has a nine-hole executive golf course, all water sports, tennis, and 84 acres of hiking trails.

Grand Lido Negril Resort & Spa, Negril, Jamaica

The upscale Grand Lido Negril has a clothing-optional beach, pool and hot tub, but otherwise does not allow public nudity. The "super-inclusive" package at this 210-room resort includes top-shelf drinks and gourmet dining, all tips, entertainment, land and water sports.

Hidden Beach Resort, Riviera Maya, Mexico

This 42-room resort at Kantenah Bay claims to be the only all-inclusive, clothing-optional resort in Mexico. Explicit sexual behavior is banned, but you can be fully nude at all meals, sports and activities. The resort is oceanfront and also has a pretty pool area with palapas and a lazy river section.

LaSource, Grenada

LaSource is not a nudist resort but does have a nude (mostly topless) beach. The resort has 100 rooms on Pink Gin Beach, four restaurants, and a dedication to holistic relaxation and exercise through yoga, tai chi, and other activities. LaSource has multiple restaurants and bars as well as a full array of land and water sports, and welcomes solo travelers as well as couples.

Hawksbill Beach Resort, Antigua

The Rex Resorts' Hawksbill Beach Resort has a secluded clothing-optional beach -- the only one on Antigua. The resort has 26 rooms on 37 acres of lush property, including detached cottages. All-inclusive rates include room, drinks and dining, water sports, tennis, entertainment, and tips.

Breezes Runaway Bay, Jamaica

SuperClubs' all-inclusive Breezes Runaway Bay resort has a small clothing-optional beach and Jacuzzi. The resort was extensively remodeled in 2007, caters to adults, and offers the vast array of inclusive amenities typical of the SuperClubs chain, including multiple dining options and land and water activities.

Rocalta Resort and Spa, Jamaica

This Negril resort is clothing-optional and offers both all-inclusive and B&B packages. Families are welcome along with couples. There's no real beach, but you can swim off the rocks at the base of the resort, and a free shuttle runs to nearby Negril Beach. The 30-room hotel has a spa and rooms with oceanfront verandas, and suites.

Breezes Bahamas

The Breezes resort in the Bahamas is an all-inclusive with a small nude beach. This Nassau resort has 400 rooms on Cable Beach, is located close to the Crystal Palace Casino, and boasts amenities as diverse as rock-climbing and circus trapeze lessons.

Nude Sailing and Cruises

A handful of charter yachts in the Caribbean, such as the Billy Jean and the Endless Summer II out of the British Virgin Islands, specialize in nude cruises. Such charters are especially popular for small groups looking for a degree of privacy on their vacation. Nudist and naturist groups also occasionally charter large cruise ships for nude Caribbean cruises.
