Stefania Fernandez is 18, she's beautiful, and she is Miss Universe 2009 -- and if the tiara sets a bit askew or looks dented there's a reason. The reigning Miss Universe dropped it in shock when it was announced that Stefania Fernandez was the winner.
Miss Venezuela Stefania Fenandez Wins Miss Universe 2009 in a Night of Firsts
Date: August 23, 2009According to Celestrellas, Stefania Fernandez said she would make history and become the first person to ever bring home the Miss Universe title for a second consecutive year. And that is exactly what she did, beating out 83 other beautiful hopefuls from around the world. It is just that it had never happened before and not one person in the audience and on the stage thought it would happen.
Except Stefania Fernandez.
The former Miss Venezuela was crowned at the Atlantis Resort in Nassau in the Bahamas Sunday evening, beating out an amazing array of beautiful women from around the world. The picture-perfect Venezuelan is the second stunning beauty queen in two years from Venezuela to win the coveted title and the sixth overall in the 59-year history of the pageant, both Miss Universe records. In fact, Venezuela holds more international beauty pageant crowns than any other country (15).
But in a night of firsts and records, no one expected the reigning Miss Universe to actually fumble the passing of the tiara. The crown was quickly retrieved and placed on the equally ecstatic head of the new Miss Universe. (If there was any damage, none was evident. Nor have subsequent photos revealed damage...)
Many did, however, expect reality show beauty Heidi Montag Pratt to fumble something. And she did -- her entire performance. Another first, Heidi Montag Pratt performed "live" at the Miss Universe 2009 Pageant. Lip-synching and clumsily dancing her way through an excruciatingly painful-to-watch routine, NBC, which aired the event, perhaps sensing the world's pain, cut into the performance to show photos of Top 15 finalists.
But as painful as Heidi Montag Pratt's first so-called "live" performance was, it could not dampen the excitement of the pageant.
Kristen Dalton, Miss USA, who made it to the pageant under the controversial cloud of de-crowned Miss California Carrie Prejean's anti-gay marriage statement at the Miss USA Pageant, finished in the Top 10.
Stefania Fernandez takes over from last year's Miss Universe winner, Miss Venezuela 2008 and Miss Universe 2008 Dayana Mendoza. Dayana Mendoza was standing, nervously waiting the announcement of the winner. When Stefania Fernandez name was spoken, the excited Dayana Menoza was so ecstatic for her fellow beauty queen national that she actually dropped the symbol of their pageant.
According to the Telegraph, Stefania Fernandez will become an international advocate for HIV/AIDS education, research, and legislation, just like her predecessor. Stefania Fernandez also won an undisclosed cash purse, a $100,000 acting scholarship at a New York acting academy, a five-day holiday package in the Bahamas for two, jewelry and clothes.
Stefania Fernandez took the Miss Universe 2009 crown by scoring highest overall in three competitive categories: swimsuit, evening gown and interview.
It is estimated that over a billion people in over 150 countries worldwide watched Miss Venezuela Stefania Fernandez win the Miss Universe 2009 crown and title Sunday evening.
