A rich history of immigration (and accompanying historical tensions) makes St. Croix the most cosmopolitan of the U.S. Virgin Islands, where Dominicans, Danes, Filipinos and Palestinians mingle to create a vibrant and unique local culture.
"A little mix of everything" distinguishes St. Croix in general. Whereas its sister islands can be characterized by urban energy (St. Thomas) and rustic serenity (St. John), St. Croix is home to two historic towns of several thousand souls -- Christiansted and Fredriksted -- as well as premier diving locations, three golf courses, and even a small tropical rainforest.
Lodging options are varied, and generally affordable: You can stay in a Dutch-colonial villa in Christiansted, a beachfront resort, or a private residence overlooking the sea.
It’s perhaps surprising given its size, but St. Croix manages to feel at once busy and intimate. Part of this is the island's focus on events and activities, which renew with every month. April, for instance, features a Forbes Magazine top-rated food and wine festival, while "Jump Up" festivals with live music, drink, dance, and performances are held four times a year. "Mardi Croix," the island's annual actual Carnival celebration, happens the weekend before Fat Tuesday. Barring that, there's always a tour of the Cruzan Rum distillery, where you can pick up rare bottlings and start a celebration of your own.
