BELMOPAN, Belize: The United States is to appoint an ambassador to Belize. This was disclosed to the media by Belize Prime Minister Dean Barrow, who said that US President Barack Obama told him that he is likely to announce his nomination in the next six weeks.
Dean Barrow said that he sat at the same table with President Obama at Saturday night's dinner at the Fifth Summit of the Americas in Port of Spain, Trinidad, when he had informal discussions with the US president.
He said that Obama explained that the appointment of the ambassador will have to go through the Congressional confirmation process before he or she could be posted.
The President also indicated to Barrow that he would like to visit Belize and that the ambassador will work out the logistics of his proposed visit.
During the opening ceremonies held at the Summit, Obama said he wanted to start a new beginning for US relations with the other countries of the hemisphere.
